Frequently Asked Questions

Where does kinesiology come from?

Kinesiology as a discipline originated in the United States of America with the work of a chiropractor, Dr George Goodheart. He undertook a great deal of research but kept the information within the chiropractic fraternity. In the early 1970’s Dr John F. Thie decided that the principle of staying in balance, rather than doing crisis management when persons got ill, would be a healthier approach. With Dr Goodheart’s permission, he developed the Touch For Health branch of Specialised Kinesiology. From that beginning have grown many different branches, all having in common though, the use of muscle monitoring as a feedback system from the client.

How can you work on babies or from a distance?

We use the principle of surrogating. Every person has their own electromagnetic field. Just as when touching an electric wire, a person gets a shock, but if touched by another person, the current passes through the original person and affects the second one. We use this principle in a more refined way. Our ball-and socket joints have an incredibly large number of proprioceptor cells that inform our nervous system where in space we are at any given moment. If these joints are abducted and locked into position, the information stored in them at the moment runs like a repetitive tape between the joint and our brain. This is what we use to “hold” the information of another person and thus check in surrogate what needs addressing for that person.

Who are you talking to?

I am talking to you. As I say things aloud, your nervous system registers what I am saying and if there is a stressor involved, or an inability to adapt with regards to the challenge, your nervous system responds by changing the state of the muscle I am checking.

How can you say that my muscle is responding when I don’t know what you are checking?

It is not your body that is responding, but rather your nervous system. However the response of your nervous system registers in the state of the muscle I am checking. How is it possible that I check something without your conscious mind “knowing” what that is? Well, the analogy I use is that of electrical circuits. You have yours, and I have mine. However, through the touch it is like closing a switch and making the two circuits, one. That is why you can respond to what I know to be challenging without you being consciously aware of what that challenge is.

What is wrong with me?

There is nothing wrong with you – and if you mean to diagnose, we don’t do that. Our philosophy is that it is immaterial what a person presents with. Symptoms are merely messengers that alert us to the fact that we are not adapting the way we are programmed to and so to go and seek help. Diagnosis belongs to the medical profession. We focus on how a person is doing what they are doing, and why and then through various options offer them better neurological responses to the ones they have been using.

When will I feel better?

Every individual works differently and at a pace that is specific to them but you will notice when you are feeling better.

Will kinesiology influence, undermine or conflict with my religious beliefs?

I realise that the work we do is unknown territory to you, but I can assure you that the tool of Kinesiology does not interfere with religious beliefs.

What kind of health conditions can kinesiology help with?

Any physical symptom will be an indicator of an overload of stress. Muscle testing can help you to find the root cause of the stress so that your body can heal. It is a powerful tool that can uncover and delve into emotional issues that you are holding you back as well as helping manage our mental health.

Is there anything kinesiology definitely can’t help with?

Kinesiology is not a substitute for proper medical examination, diagnosis and treatment and is not intended to replace or supersede any medical advice given to you by your doctor or any other medical specialist. A Kinesiologist is a wonderful person to have in your circle of support. I will help you to identify specific areas that could be leading to unnecessary stress. By having a Kinesiologist on board to settle your nervous system and look at the fears, habits and beliefs that you are holding on to will help the healing process to happen with ease.

Is it possible to use kinesiology alongside prescribed medication?

Absolutely. I will work on the underlying cause of the stress and not the condition or symptoms themselves. And as a matter of interest a Kinesiologist cannot diagnose conditions or prescribe or ‘take off’ medication.

How does kinesiology differ from therapy?

Kinesiology is a form of therapy itself. Counselling or psychotherapy is a mental and emotional process and is usually a spoken one. Kinesiology focuses on the whole person (mental, emotional AND physical) by using muscle testing to identify underlying stressors. Our mental health is rarely only about mental and emotional issues. It will very typically have a gut health aspect namely an imbalance of gut bacteria. A Kinesiologist’s treatment will involve finding the imbalances and either talking about what comes up, or may involve balancing using acupressure points, nutrition or gentle structural adjustment.

How does an online session differ from an in-person session?

The biggest difference is the muscle testing. If you come to a session in person I will be able to test your muscles and work directly on your body to help correct any imbalance. If we work online, I surrogate for you and do the muscle testing on myself. I guide you through any physical balances ie specific points that need to be rubbed or held. If there are any physical adjustments that need to be done there will usually be another way of being able to bring about balance and defuse the stress.

Are online kinesiology appointments as effective as in person appointments?

This is an example of where a kinesiologist will surrogate for their client.

The following is a testimonial from my client Julie Richardson:

"I have lived in Asia for the past five years and really missed having kinesiology sessions. When I discovered that Bernie was able to perform distance balances online I was thrilled and booked my first session with her shortly after. It’s been almost two years now and I’m so grateful for these online sessions. My sessions with Bernie are run through Google Meets which are so simple to join. I always make sure I have a glass of water before starting and find a quiet and comfy spot in our home to sit for the session. Bernie puts me into her circuit at the beginning of the session and then we begin. The entire process is easy and stress free and the clarity and benefits I gain after each session are invaluable. I am incredibly grateful that technology has allowed us to be able to have these sessions."

Is kinesiology effective for helping children?

Kinesiology is extremely helpful for children. NOT is so gentle it can be used to settle a baby’s nervous system directly after birth. The tool of kinesiology can help to understand and balance what is needed for a child to find more ease and adaptation in their environment without them even being able to talk or communicate. It was this route that lead me to the wonders of kinesiology.

What is NOT (Neural Organisation Technique)?

NOT is a specialised branch of Kinesiology which works through the central nervous system to restore structural, bio-chemical and emotional balance. NOT works with primal survival reflex systems and corrects the neurological processes in order of priority (ie survival is more important than feeding, feeding is more important than reproduction) It was developed by Dr Carl Ferrari, a Chiropractor, and includes the use of acupressure, neuro-vascular points, neuro-lymphatic reflexes and reactive muscle monitoring among other things. The first part of the protocol takes the body out of fight/flight/freeze. Due to the pace of life it is usually a good way to start a session so that the nervous system is settled before looking to affect change in whatever way tests out.

“In layman’s terms…
Imagine yourself as an extraordinary computer, using the most advanced technologies in computer design.  Your nervous system is the operating software.  It keeps you functioning to optimum standards. Your digestive, endocrine and immune systems are the specialised programs, each one essential to a specific task.  Your muscular and skeletal structure is the output, allowing your body to do the “talking”.  Now, consider what would result if damage occurred to the programs!  The first program errors might be imperceptible.  However, compensating for those errors would soon lead to complications.  Eventually you would have to make some serious corrections.  You might even require a technician to reprogram a whole series of commands – and this is what an N.O.T practitioner does! Trying to address structural or functional difficulties without addressing the relevant neurological short-circuiting is like changing a light bulb when the real problem is that you have blown a fuse.”

What to expect in your first session?

Thefirst session will be the longest as the client history needs to be taken.Thereafter sessions will be an hour long. The kinesiologist will help to give an understanding of how they work. Theywill work on the client fully clothed lying on a plinth so that it is easy tocheck different muscles. It is recommended to come to sessions in comfyclothes.
