What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology literally means ‘the study of movement’, and in its original form it was indeed an academic discipline studying the movement of the body and how the body moves. Several academic kinesiologists then focused on how the muscles causing movement could be assessed for their integrity of function using manual techniques that, while not being quantitative, can provide qualitative information.

In 1964, Dr George Goodheart brought manual muscle testing into the chiropractic field, and then in the late 1960s made the linkage between muscle testing and the energy systems of Chinese acupuncture.

Kinesiology is a potent and remarkable system that enables a practitioner to work with a wide range of issues. While it can work exceedingly well with the defusion of emotional stress, it may work equally well with the elimination of muscular pain and weakness. It can also be effective in loosening the grip of self-destructive habits such as obsessions and addictions.

It is through the remarkable biofeedback mechanism of muscle monitoring that the subconscious can be directly contacted and just as directly divulge its secrets.

The kinesiologist is not the dispenser of healing knowledge to the client but rather the facilitator of the body’s own wish to be healed and whole. One of the most fascinating aspects of being a kinesiologist is that every person is unique and every treatment is utterly individual. Each treatment is a personal journey for both the practitioner and the client. Therefore the practitioner operates more as a detective than as a diagnostician. In fact, in kinesiology we do not diagnose at all; we simply follow the trail of clues that the body provides us through the muscle response.

Kinesiology helps to bring back harmony to wherever you are feeling stuck whether it be mentally, emotionally or physically. We can often find ourselves in a similar situation repeating a non-supportive pattern. When we are able to make the conscious connection to how something that happened in the past has set up this reaction pattern, it is then easier to free up energy to create more ease and flow.

So many of us are moving through life unconsciously and unaware of suppressed expression. What are we pushing down and ignoring? Our bodies are super smart at showing us when we need to slow down to process something…sometimes by making us fall down but perhaps we don’t need to wait for this to happen but can use the tool of kinesiology to help us navigate our next step forward. Who would say no to being helped to take the next step forward to allow more ease and flow?

How do we do this?

By using muscle response testing. By testing one or more muscles a Kinesiologist will help to find imbalances and the underlying root cause. Muscle response testing was validated in studies by Dr Anne Jensen and Oxford University. The study found that it is as accurate as a commonly used medical procedure (manual blood pressure testing) when used to assess what is true for an individual.

Muscle monitoring is the key to kinesiology. This is the act of monitoring changes within a muscle response through a lock-unlock reaction. Kinesiologists are trained to use this highly accurate method to identify stress on a physical, mental, emotional, chemical, environmental and/or situational level. Then, once the stress or stressors have been correctly identified and verified, we use the same technique to find the best, neurologically most appropriate, option/s to apply in order to best assist you, the client, in improving your quality of life.
